Staying Fit During the Holidays

Everyone is aware of the importance of maintaining health every day, especially this time of year when folks are looking forward to spending time with family and eating their favorite holiday foods.

The classes Orangetheory Fitness offers give participants an extreme, yet fun workout that helps change the way people not only exercise, but live their lives as well.

With different trainers leading classes every day, each workout varies in technique but all focus on high intensity interval training. This includes doing a cardio workout on a treadmill or stationary bike, and strength training using water rowing and weights. Class attendees are given a monitor that records heart rate and calories burned throughout the workout.

OTF trainers note that by doing the high intensity interval training workouts, you are able to burn more calories and create an overall body workout.

Classes are 60 or 90 minutes long and within that time frame more than 500 calories will be burned. The workout can be modified for anyone’s particular goal by adding more or less weight or doing more or less rounds in the cardio portion of the workout.

Throughout the winter holidays, many people spend time with family and friends and that often means a lot of eating. OTF trainers offer some helpful tips to stay in shape in case you miss a few days at the gym or over-indulge in foods not on your diet.

  • Instead of eating all of our cheat foods, we can drink some water. For each time we see a cheat food, take a cup or two of water and you’ll definitely end up eating a bit less. It will also boost your metabolism and cleanse your whole system.
  • If we’re just sitting around watching TV with our family, we could be doing a plank. Maybe even challenge our family to ‘plank-offs.
  • Commit yourself to do a specific, challenging exercise anytime you over-indulge during the season. This will make you more accountable to eat in moderation. If you over-indulge one day, push yourself to do, say, 10 burpees.
