“If it’s worth building, it’s worth building well.” That’s the motto of San Francisco-based Plant Construction. The general contractor for the extensive Public Market redevelopment brings core values of quality, integrity, value and challenge to this new neighborhood project.
With Plant’s 100+workers on this job site Monday through Friday, 7am to 6pm, we wanted to introduce you to a key team member, project manager Travis Knight. Travis fell in love with construction while working his first job in high school. He never turned back, pursuing a Construction Management degree at Arizona State University and landing his first job immediately after graduation.
Travis thrives on the fast-paced environment of construction and embraces its challenges and pressures. He enjoys the variety of work and the energy of days where there is never a dull moment. Travis goes kite-boarding and hang-gliding to “relax.”
And Travis’s life is about to get a little more fast-paced. He and his wife are expecting their first baby in July.
Quick Round
Is there a specific part of the work you find rewarding?
Working with the local vendors. Plant Construction is committed to hiring local subcontractors and these folks know the local landscape:
- C. Jones & Sons, Inc. in Berkeley – for earthwork and excavation
- A&B Construction in Berkeley – site utilities
- Berkeley Cement, Inc. – Ready-mix concrete delivery
Something fun that helps keep the workday moving along?
Plant really believes in educating the next generation of the workforce. Each week, our team tours civil engineering students through the Public Market job site. The firm also hires interns from underserved communities.
Favorite place to eat in the Food Hall at Public Market?
That is a tough one, but Mayo & Mustard is awesome. Gotta love their sandwiches!
