Get Fit for Fall

While spring is the symbolic season of starting over, fall is the season that many folks see as the time to re-focus, set goals and look forward to ending the year on a high note. And whether you join a gym, take a class or play sports, motivation is the key to staying on track with fitness goals.

Our friends at Orangetheory Fitness Emeryville, located in the breezeway north of the Food Hall, provided some good motivating messages for staying fit, trim and happy this fall. Courtesy of the workout method’s passionate coaches, below are some motivating one-liners we crowd-sourced from OTF regulars.

  • “You have to hustle for that muscle.”
  • “What doesn’t challenge you, doesn’t change you.”
  • “Champions are made in the 4th quarter.”
  • “You’re an athlete, you can add more weight (on the machine, not on your body).”
  • “Train insane or remain the same.”
  • “You can do anything for 15 seconds.”

You can imagine how powerful these messages are when delivered from an OTF instructor. OTF’s skilled coaches guide members through a heart-pumping workout that shows immediate, measurable outputs of exactly how hard you’re working.

If you haven’t yet tried this unique workout, OTF includes three different components: interval training on the treadmill, indoor rowing and weight room floor exercises. The hour-long classes vary day-to-day and often have a certain focus (strength, endurance or power, etc.).

OTF Coach and dedicated runner Kat Gunsur noted that the workouts are an effective complement to other fitness regimens, such as running. “Runners move forward or backward. We’re not moving side to side or rotating; in class we do lateral lunges, work on the Bosu ball, do rotations for your core, and in that way we increase your range of motion.”

Kat also noted that OTF attracts people of all fitness levels. “The cool thing is you’ve got your ultra-competitive people and then people who just want something that’s going to give them results and are newer to fitness. So because it’s all these different fitness levels, that’s the biggest draw because it really is for everybody.”
