Be Your Own Barista

Peet’s Coffee at Public Market is always a cozy, relaxing spot to start your day, catch up with a friend or simply enjoy a delicious hot beverage. Occasionally, busy schedules don’t allow for stopping by the store for a coffee, so we’ve gathered some of the latest tips and knowledge for brewing the perfect cup in your own home.

Be your own barista with these tips:

  1. Purchase your beans from Peet’s – Well, naturally. Peet’s Coffee is obsessed with freshness and its beans are roasted daily. And staying away from pre-ground coffee is one of the simplest ways to ensure an excellent cup.
  2. Grind coffee immediately before brewing – Experts say that coffee begins to lose its flavor within 30 minutes of being ground. It’s best to grind on the spot, immediately prior to brewing.
  3. Brew at the right temperature – Many automatic drip machines don’t reach optimal brewing temperature. The desired brew temperature for drip coffee is between 195 and 205 degrees Fahrenheit. To make sure your coffee maker gets hot enough, take its “temperature” using a thermometer. High-end models sometimes have a manual temperature adjustment, but older, less expensive makers do not.
  4. Measure coffee by weight instead of volume – Using a digital scale to measure takes just a second and allows you to better compare how much coffee and water is used each time. Ideally, a ratio of one part coffee to 20 parts water, or about 7.5g of coffee to 150mL of water, makes a fairly strong cup of coffee.
