Permanent Sculpture Lands at Emeryville’s Christie Park

Oxford Properties and City Center Realty Partners, the owners of nearby Public Market Emeryville, commissioned the site-specific artwork, which was celebrated November 6th

Emeryville, CA, November 6, 2022 – Continuing its run of supporting local arts and the arts community, Public Market Emeryville is pleased to announce the installation of Chocolate Cake with Rainbow Sprinkles, a new permanent, site-specific sculpture at Christie Park. Commissioned by Public Market Emeryville owners Oxford Properties, alongside partners City Center Realty Partners, through Emeryville’s Percent for Art Ordinance, the sculpture adds whimsy and creativity to the expanded and renovated Christie Park. A celebration of the new artwork took place on Sunday, November 6th.

The 10-foot-tall sculpture is designed by Sofie Ramos, an Oakland and Los Angeles-based artist known for her large-scale sculptural installations of vibrantly painted and precariously placed household forms and textures. Chocolate Cake with Rainbow Sprinkles is made with steel, wood, acrylic and foam and adds a playful but complex meditation on decadence, indulgence, and festivity.

“As an emerging artist here in the Bay, a project of this scope and scale (my first permanent public artwork) is an amazing accomplishment and milestone that will have a hugely positive impact on my art practice as a whole and my professional career.”

This latest public art installation comes on the heels of two other major art celebrations in Emeryville, both of which received significant support from Public Market. Oxford Properties was a co-presenting sponsor of “Sea Walls Emeryville,” the ocean-themed mural festival, with Public Market hosting the organizers and sponsoring one of the artworks. The 36th Annual Emery Arts Exhibit took place this past month as a pop-up in one of Public Market’s most visible retail spaces.

“We are proud to continue supporting the arts and also to contribute to the City of Emeryville’s ongoing reputation as a leader in public art,” says Mark Stefan with City Center Realty Partners. “And we know the public will fall in love with this delightful, whimsical piece of cake.”

Christie Park, with its popular playground, expansive green and dog run and proximity to Public Market, is already a vibrant site for locals and visitors. The public art’s sponsors anticipate the playful artwork will attract even more people to the Park and quickly become a hot spot for Instagrammers as well as the general public. A key stop for those touring Emeryville’s Rotten City Cultural District, one of only 14 statewide.

“We are pleased to further support and celebrate Emeryville’s local arts community through an engaging public art piece,” said Lauren Krause, VP, Development at Oxford Properties. “Building on our commitment to shape places that enrich and connect communities, we look forward to the public enjoying an artwork evoking the warmth and creativity of Emeryville.”
